Analysts at ANZ explained that it was a night of two halves for equities.

Key Quotes:

"Key indexes closed lower in Japan and Europe (Nikkei -0.7%, Euro Stoxx -0.8%, DAX -0.7%) and opening poorly in the US before bouncing around. At the time of writing US indexes are still in the red (Dow Jones -0.5%, S&P 500 and Nasdaq both -0.2%)."

"The VIX rose to 26. Treasuries were little changed (10-year -2bp). The USD was sold with JPY and CHF the best performers, likely reflecting some unease in the market."

"The US treasury curve flattened and European curves bear steepened. Gold is up 0.3% and WTI for near-term delivery -0.2% to USD59.18/bbl at the time of writing. The market continues the countdown to the US CPI release tomorrow."
