Merkel in coalition talks with SPD leader
FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who secured third term in power in the Sunday elections, held a press conference in Berlin on Monday, during which she told reporters that she had already spoken with the chairman of the Social Democrats Sigmar Gabriel about the possibility of forming a coalition. She added however that she was open to talks with other parties.
“We conservatives have a clear mandate to form a government and Germany needs a stable government, so we will carry out this mandate,” Angela Merkel stressed.
The Chancellor assured that the current German EU policy would remain “integration friendly,” but that reasons for the growing popularity of the Alternative für Deutschland eurosceptic party would be analyzed. She emphasized that reform efforts must continue in order to make the EU more competitive. When asked about Ireland, she said that the situation of the country was improving, thanks to the country's commitment to reforms.
